The development of South Australia’s Mental Health Strategic Plan has begun and we want to hear from you!
The South Australian Mental Health Commission is leading the development of our State’s Mental Health Strategic Plan and is seeking input from South Australians.
South Australians are encouraged to share their ideas and suggestions about what should be considered in developing the Plan.
The Plan aims to provide strategic direction for action plans to build, sustain and strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of South Australians.
The SA Mental Health Commission places people with lived experience of mental illness, their families, loved ones and carers are central to all our work.
We would like your feedback on:
- The existing mental health system; and
- Ways in which South Australians can strengthen their mental wellbeing.
With one in 5 South Australians likely to experience a mental illness in any given year and as many as half of us likely to experience mental health problems in our lifetime, at some stage you, someone you love or a friend or workmate may be mentally unwell.
That’s why it’s important for South Australians to have a say on the kind of services and support we want – for ourselves, our family members and friends into the future.
Your feedback – throughout the process – will assist with the development of the State’s Mental Health Strategic Plan.
The SA Mental Health Commission is taking a whole-of-community, whole-of-government, whole-of-person, whole-of-life approach to the Plan because at the end of the day it’s not just the Commission’s Plan – it will belong to all South Australians.
What is the purpose of the Mental Health Strategic Plan?
The Plan will set the direction for the mental wellbeing of South Australians into the future.
The Mental Health Strategic Plan is not just about mental illness and the public and private systems. The Commission is taking a whole-of-community, whole-of-government, whole-of-person, whole-of-life approach to mental health. Development of the Plan is the next step towards building, sustaining and strengthening the mental health and wellbeing of South Australians.
It will also look at how people living with mental health problems can access quality support to lead a life that’s meaningful for them.
The Plan will also look at prevention, education and anti-stigmatisation and the provision of early support for children, young people and adults when they first experience symptoms, as well as the support available for people working in mental health services.
We are looking for feedback about how government agencies such as health, housing, education, employment, justice and disability, non-government and private sectors interact with each other to maximise positive outcomes for people who experience mental health problems, and their families, carers and friends.
We’re aware of the many reviews South Australia’s mental health system and services have already undergone – and we want to use that information. However, we still need your input. With your help, we will question what’s worked, what hasn’t, and why. Together, we will build on this knowledge and identify gaps to create a practical, supportive, flexible mental health system for us all.
The Commission wants to hear from you, even if you have not had any contact with mental health services.
We need to engage everyone and work together to make our mental health system better and to strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of South Australians.
